Sixty something years ago Ed Mirvish opened up Honest Ed’s Bargain House at Bathurth and Bloor in Toronto. It’s been a Toronto institution ever since. Until today. Today the store will close for the last time and never re-open, making way for a bunch of shoebox condos and, I assume, a coffee shop that sells mix CDs like it’s 2006 still. I’ve never lived in The Annex, and I am very lazy, so I didn’t frequent Ed’s, but the three or four times a year my wife would take me there to pick up a few things was always a treat (minus the washrooms which are not built for the hefty gentleman in mind). Honest Ed’s sold everything, so I never walked out empty handed. They had great prices on everything from cassette tapes to winter boots. I will really miss this Toronto landmark.
I decided to take my 5D down to Bathurst and Bloor today to get some photos of the wonderful old building before it’s closed for good. Enjoy!
